Philippines 2-1 Thailand in ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup Semi-Final
The Philippines edged reigning champions Thailand 2-1 in a thrilling first leg of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 semi-final. Sandro Reyes gave the home side an early lead, but Suphanan Bureerat equalized before halftime. However, in a dramatic finish, Enrique Linares headed home a late free-kick in the 95th minute to secure a crucial victory for the Philippines.

The Philippines, missing suspended captain Amani Aguinaldo, started goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad for the second consecutive match, replacing the injured Patrick Deyto. Thailand, meanwhile, welcomed back key attacking midfielder Supachok Sarachat from injury. The hosts began brightly, dominating possession and testing Thai goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai early on.

Thailand had an early chance through Akarapong Pumwiset, but his header from a Suphanat Mueanta cross went wide. The Philippines took the lead in the 21st minute when Alex Monis set up Daniel Reyes, who scored a stunning left-footed goal from outside the area. Despite dominating possession, the Philippines conceded an equalizer just before halftime. A swift counter-attack, initiated by Supachok and Suphanat, culminated in a cross from Patrik Gustavsson, which Suphanan finished to level the score.

Thailand nearly took the lead early in the second half when Suphanat's shot struck the crossbar. The home side appealed for a penalty but were denied. Both teams created chances, with Gustavsson and Akarapong going close for Thailand.

Despite dominating the second half, Thailand struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. In the 82nd minute, Akarapong had a good chance but was denied by the Philippines goalkeeper.

Thailand narrowly missed a late winner when Peeradon Chamratsamee's shot grazed the post in stoppage time. However, the drama unfolded at the other end.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw, the Philippines were awarded a free-kick. Zico Bailey's delivery was met by Paul Tabinas, whose header found the unmarked Patrick Linares, who headed home to give the Philippines the advantage.

The two sides will face off again in the second leg in Bangkok on Monday.
