Pep Guardiola Praises James Trafford Despite Limited Minutes at Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has publicly lauded goalkeeper James Trafford’s development, describing the 22-year-old as “one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe,” while acknowledging the difficult situation created by intense competition in the squad.
Speaking after City’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Bournemouth, Guardiola highlighted Trafford’s journey from the club’s academy to becoming an England international during a standout 2024-25 season on loan at Burnley. City triggered a £31 million buy-back clause in the summer of 2025 to bring the keeper back to the Etihad, with Guardiola initially installing him as first choice.
However, the summer arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain has restricted Trafford to just five starts this season. The Italian has started the last eight matches across all competitions, leaving the Englishman on the bench.“It’s a special situation,” Guardiola said. “James has grown incredibly. We are delighted with him, but we have two top-level goalkeepers. Competition is part of being at Manchester City.”Sources indicate Trafford remains highly regarded internally and no decision has been made regarding a potential January loan, despite reported interest from Newcastle United. City are reluctant to weaken their depth during a demanding schedule.
