Due to Ramadan, 2034 World Cup Schedule in Saudi Arabia Could Be Moved Forward

The 2034 World Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia is expected to start in January 2034, 10 months earlier than previously planned.
This has the potential to have a major impact on the schedules of Europe's top leagues which could see significant changes, as happened with the 2022 Qatar World Cup which was held in November and December.
At next week's FIFA congress, representatives from FIFA's 211 member associations will confirm who will host the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. The 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, although the opening three matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
Hot Temperature Constraints and Schedule Changes
Officially, the 2034 Saudi Arabia World Cup is still scheduled to take place in the summer, but extreme temperatures in the Middle Eastern country, which can reach 45 degrees Celsius in June, make holding it in the summer considered unfeasible.
This condition has the potential to endanger the health of players and fans who come to watch the match.
Given these issues, it is likely that the 2034 World Cup will be moved to January, a move that is considered more realistic.
This is in light of the experience of the 2022 Qatar World Cup which was first held in winter, namely in November and December, to avoid the scorching heat in the region.
Potential Clash with the Month of Ramadan
One significant impact of the shift in dates would be a clash with the Premier League calendar. If the World Cup were to start in January 2034, the European domestic seasons would likely be affected, with Christmas and Boxing Day fixtures being compressed or even shortened.
This could result in a reduction in the number of matches in the first half of the season, as happened in previous editions of the World Cup.
In addition, this schedule would also coincide with the Ramadan period, when Muslims are required to fast throughout the day. Unless there is an agreement with Saudi authorities to provide leniency in fasting, a World Cup schedule starting in early January would be a more likely option.
Ramadan, which takes place in March-April, has the potential to further complicate the fixture schedule, especially given the importance of fasting for many players and staff.
Impact on European Competition
It is not just the Premier League that is affected, European club competitions will also be significantly impacted. With the World Cup schedule changes affecting the competition window, the early stages of the three European club competitions are likely to have to be completed in a shorter time frame.
This will add stress to the congested schedule and leave many teams having to adjust to limited time to play their games.
With the 2026 World Cup set to be the first edition with 48 teams and 104 matches, the tournament is expected to last 38 days.
While that window could be shortened slightly, 35 days is considered the minimum required. This could lead to a longer break in competition, with the Premier League possibly having to stop for seven weeks, depending on how the schedule can be adjusted.
