BRI League 1: Persebaya's Difficulty in Conquering Madura United

Persebaya Surabaya successfully continued their victory in the 2024/2025 BRI Liga 1. They won 2-1 when they visited Madura United's headquarters in the 12th week match at the Gelora Bangkalan Stadium, Madura, Monday (2/12/2024) night.
Persebaya Surabaya's two goals were scored by midfielder Mohammed Rashid (44' and 84). Meanwhile, the host Madura United only managed to reply with a brilliant goal scored by Maxuel Silva (69').

In terms of play, Persebaya played badly in the first half. Many times the ball passed to the front line failed to be used as a goal. Madura United players also looked increasingly alert in repelling the away team's attacks.
In the second half, several changes were made by Persebaya. They were able to appear more threatening since the entry of Malik Risaldi as a right winger and Flavio Silva who was again played as a striker.


Not easy
After the match, Persebaya Surabaya coach, Paul Munster, said that even though they won, it was difficult for his team to create opportunities to score goals.
"It was a tough match. I came here with the priority of winning. It must be admitted that it was a tough match, but overall we played well," said Paul Munster, Persebaya coach, after the match.
"I was disappointed that we conceded after being ahead. After that, we played aggressively and made tactical changes. Luckily, we ended the match with a score of 2-1. I'm happy to get three points," he added.

Steady at the Top of the Standings
This duel actually shows the results of the performance gap between the two teams. Before meeting, Persebaya was at the top of the standings with 24 points, while Madura United was in the relegation zone, precisely in 17th position with only six points.
However, Persebaya still seemed to have difficulty overcoming the resistance of the lower-ranked team. Luckily, Rashid, who is a midfielder, broke the deadlock twice and made Persebaya take home three points.
"I am grateful. Thank God we were able to bring home three points from Madura. This is also thanks to the coach, officials, players, and everyone's hard work. Hopefully in the future we will be much better," said Toni Firmansyah, Persebaya midfielder.
This result keeps Persebaya at the top of the standings with 27 points. Madura United still has to be willing to be in the relegation zone without getting additional points.
