Serie A | Roma 0-2 Atalanta: Unstoppable Dea doom sorry Giallorossi
Marten de Roon’s deflected shot and a late header from Nicolò Zaniolo against his former team sent Roma to their fourth consecutive Serie A defeat, while Atalanta secured their eighth straight victory.
The Giallorossi made their home debut under Claudio Ranieri, who previously faced a loss to Napoli and a thrilling 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. With Mario Hermoso injured and Nicolò Pisilli suspended, Paulo Dybala returned to the starting lineup in a 3-5-2 formation. La Dea entered the match on a streak of seven consecutive Serie A wins and had recently defeated Young Boys 6-1, despite being without Davide Zappacosta, Ben Godfrey, and Gianluca Scamacca.

Early in the game, Leandro Paredes tested Marco Carnesecchi with a powerful long-range shot in the fourth minute, followed by Manu Koné narrowly missing the top corner with another distanced effort.
Ademola Lookman found the net after 23 minutes, but his goal was disallowed for offside as he redirected Raoul Bellanova's wayward volley.
Charles De Ketelaere's header was comfortably saved by Mile Svilar, and Mats Hummels blocked Mateo Retegui from scoring on a pull-back from Odilon Kossounou.
Roma had a prime opportunity right after halftime, but Dovbyk could only graze the ball with his toes off a clever Dybala flick, which Carnesecchi managed to thwart.
Nicolò Zaniolo was met with boos from the home crowd as he entered the pitch against his old side, having left on less than harmonious terms.
Atalanta took the lead following an extended attacking sequence, with a clearance finding Marten de Roon. His shot deflected off Zeki Celik, wrong-footing Svilar and securing the goal.
Hummels was forced off with a thigh issue, and Roma nearly equalized when Alexis Saelemaekers set up Gianluca Mancini at the back post, but the defender couldn't direct the ball on target.
Bryan Cristante also left the game with a muscle injury, and Ederson missed a clear chance to double the lead, sending the ball wide from six yards out off a Marco Brescianini assist.
Zaniolo faced even louder jeers when he scored Atalanta’s second goal in the final minute, heading Juan Cuadrado’s corner with a slight deflection off Mancini to loop the ball into the far top corner. Zaniolo celebrated exuberantly, taking off his jersey and rushing to celebrate with the away fans, savoring the moment against his former club.
