Luis Suarez reveals Uruguay boss Bielsa made Darwin Nunez cry with half-time talk in 2023

In November 2023, Uruguay stunned World Cup winners Argentina by beating them 2-0 in Buenos Aires.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez scored the second goal late in the game. However, he did not have the best experience before that: as his former Uruguay teammate Luis Suarez claims, their coach Marcelo Bielsa made Darwin cry with his half-time remarks.

"I saw Darwin crying, and I told him: 'You are here because of your own merit, because of how hard you work, you are a goalscorer and you are the best," Suarez said.

"'You have to continue like this, forget what others say. Wash your face, go out and break it'.

"That is why when he scored the goal, I was the first one he greeted. For me Darwin needs affection, to be supported and containment, not other things.

“I ran into the coach in the hallway, and he told me: 'We are not helping him with those things'. I was taken aback, and I told him that I had to support him.

"After the victory, Bielsa greeted me and said: 'Do you know what happens if I don’t talk to him like that? You saw how he ran in the second half'. And I told him my part was to contain him."
