Kylian Mbappé warns of NBA-style load management as European soccer schedule lengthens
Kylian Mbappé
, the 25-year-old forward of Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team, has raised concerns about the cross-generational effects of a widening European football season schedule during an interview with GQ Sports. Drawing upon NBA's infamous "load management" issue, he highlights the potential implications on player burnout and consequent match quality.
"We are approaching the NBA model with seventy-game seasons", he said, "Personally I am not against playing so much, but we will not be able to be good every time and give the audience the expected show. In the NBA, players do not play every match and franchises practice load management. But, today, if I decided to say 'I'm tired, I'm not playing on Saturday,' it wouldn't work."
Last season, Mbappé played in 63 games for club and country and underwent some injury spells. He stresses on the need for a unified, less aggressive approach towards handling schedules. Also noticeably, he holds NBA legend LeBron James of the LA Lakers as an influential mentor for him.

Mbappé has been linked to a move to 14-time Champions League winners Real Madrid, and he hasn't dismissed these rumors yet. Surprisingly, he even hinted towards playing outside of Europe in the future, following suit of past PSG teammates Lionel Messi and Neymar who signed for MLS's Inter Miami and Saudi Pro League's Al Hilal respectively.
"Many great players who have shaped the history of football have left Europe this summer, and we are entering a new era," explained Mbappé, "It's become part of the cycle of this sport, and at some point, it will be my turn to leave. I'm not worried about these changes. I'm simply thinking about continuing my career and following my own path."
